Marvel fans, get ready! Thunderbolts, the next big team-up movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is almost here. The film brings together a group of familiar characters, many of whom have walked the line between hero and villain. And now, thanks to the latest trailer, we know who they’ll be going up against – a mysterious and terrifying figure known as The Void.
Thunderbolts features a star-studded cast including Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. New to the MCU lineup is Lewis Pullman, who plays Robert “Bob” Reynolds – also known as The Sentry… and The Void.
Who is the Void in Marvel Comics?
In the comics, The Void is the dark side of Robert Reynolds. Bob was an ordinary man until he took a strange serum created by his college professor. He was looking for a quick high, but instead, the formula (a failed version of the Super Soldier Serum) gave him incredible powers. Think strength, speed, flight, and energy blasts – almost like Superman.
However, it also gave birth to something much darker. That’s how the Void was born – a sinister, powerful entity living inside Bob. To protect the world and himself, Bob unknowingly created a superhero version of himself called The Sentry. Where the Void brings chaos, the Sentry tries to save people. But the two are always connected, locked in a constant struggle for control.
At one point in the comics, the Sentry works with Doctor Strange and Reed Richards to erase the world’s memory of him, which also makes the Void disappear. But when those memories come back, the Void returns stronger than ever.
The Void in the Thunderbolts Trailer
The new Thunderbolts trailer gives us our first look at the film’s villain. We see a shadowy figure, played by Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman, saying in a haunting voice, “I’m the Void. There’s no use fighting.”
In the same trailer, Valentina warns the team, saying, “He’s invincible, all-powerful, stronger than all the Avengers rolled into one.” That’s a huge statement – and shows just how serious the threat is. We also see the Void using his powers to turn people into dark shadows with just a gesture. It’s clear that the Thunderbolts are in for the fight of their lives.
Sentry vs. Void: Two Sides of the Same Man
Another clip gives us even more insight. We hear Valentina’s assistant Mel (played by Geraldine Viswanathan) say, “Sentry’s gone off the rails and he’s dangerous. The Avengers are gone. No one is coming to save the day.” This confirms that both the Sentry and the Void will appear in the movie – two versions of the same man, with very different goals.
The Thunderbolts will have to work together to stop this powerful threat. But how do you fight someone who is both hero and villain – and possibly more powerful than anyone they’ve faced before?
