Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha’s friendship reportedly turned cold during Kaala Patthar shoot due to a fight scene change. Here’s what Shatrughan Sinha revealed.
Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha are two legendary actors who have ruled the Hindi film industry for decades. Known for their powerful screen presence and versatile acting, they have worked together in several memorable films. However, there was a time when their friendship reportedly turned sour, and the reason behind it was a scene from the 1979 film Kaala Patthar.
Directed by Yash Chopra, Kaala Patthar featured a star-studded cast including Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra, along with Big B and Sinha. The film was a major box office success and is still remembered for its gripping storyline and strong performances. But not many know that the film also became the starting point of a rift between the two stars.
In an old interview with Zoom, Shatrughan Sinha opened up about what went wrong during the filming. He recalled that a fight sequence between him and Amitabh Bachchan was the turning point. The scene was choreographed by the well-known action director Fight Master Shetty. Sinha revealed that while watching the shoot from a corner, he noticed something that wasn’t part of the original script.
He said, “There was a scene where my body double falls, and Amitabh’s body double holds a spade near my double’s neck. I wasn’t involved directly at that moment, but I was watching everything. I don’t usually interfere in shooting, but this didn’t feel right.”
Sinha explained that he had been friends with Bachchan since their early struggle days. But things changed during the shoot, and he hinted that personal issues may have played a role too. In his memoir, Sinha also suggested that the presence of a popular actress—rumored to be Rekha—could have contributed to the distance between them.
He added, “I asked them why the fight was changed. The next day when I came to the set, I was told that the scene was edited again, and now Amitabh’s character would only beat me. I said, ‘This was not discussed. What if Shashi Kapoor’s character comes late to stop the fight? My character would die. Then what’s the point of him returning after the interval?’”
The disagreement delayed the shoot by almost 4 to 6 hours. Eventually, the scene was modified in a way that neither of the characters was shown as stronger than the other. But the damage to their personal relationship had already been done.
Shatrughan Sinha admitted that while it may have seemed like he was being arrogant, he was only standing up for what he believed was fair for his character.
Over time, the once-strong bond between the two actors weakened due to both professional and personal reasons. While both stars moved on in their careers, this incident remains a key moment in Bollywood history, showing how even small changes on set can have lasting effects on relationships.
