Marvel Studios’ latest release, Thunderbolts*, also known as The New Avengers, has achieved a big win at the box office. Over the Memorial Day weekend, the movie officially earned more money in the US than 2021’s Eternals. Not only that, but it also hit a major global milestone and is now close to beating another Marvel classic—Captain America: The First Avenger.

The New Avengers Surpasses Eternals In The US

According to data from Box Office Mojo, The New Avengers made $9.2 million during its fourth weekend in US theaters. That put it in the #4 spot on the domestic box office chart. On Monday (Memorial Day), it brought in an additional $2.4 million, which is 29.3% more than what it made last Monday.

With this, the movie’s total domestic earnings have reached $173.8 million. That means it has now officially passed the US box office total of Eternals, which earned $164.87 million during its run in 2021.

Now Chasing Captain America: The First Avenger

Next on the list? Captain America: The First Avenger, released in 2011 and starring Chris Evans. That film made $176.65 million in North America. The New Avengers is less than $3 million away from beating that figure, and it’s on track to do so soon.

If it succeeds, it will become one of the more successful non-Avengers ensemble films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Worldwide Box Office Update: Crosses $350 Million Globally

Internationally, The New Avengers is doing well, although it faced a steep drop. In its fourth weekend, it made $5.6 million overseas, which is a 64.3% drop compared to the previous weekend.

Even with the drop, the film’s international total now stands at $181.7 million. When you add that to the US total of $173.8 million, the movie’s worldwide gross is now $355.5 million.

That means it has crossed the $350 million milestone globally—another big achievement for Marvel Studios.

Can It Hit $400 Million?

Despite its strong performance, The New Avengers is starting to feel the pressure from new movie releases. Because of this, experts believe it may not be able to reach $400 million worldwide. Current estimates suggest the movie will end its run between $380 million and $390 million globally.

The New Avengers—or Thunderbolts**—was released on May 2, and it continues to attract Marvel fans despite the crowded summer box office.

Box Office Summary:

  • 4th Weekend (US): $9.2 million
  • Memorial Day Monday (US): $2.4 million
  • Total Domestic Gross: $173.8 million
  • Total International Gross: $181.7 million

Final Thoughts

The New Avengers is proving to be a solid success for Marvel. It has already beaten Eternals and is about to pass Captain America: The First Avenger. While it might not reach $400 million, crossing $350 million globally is no small feat. With a few more weeks in theaters, we’ll see just how high this superhero team can fly.
