Ben Affleck’s action thriller The Accountant 2 is facing tough competition at the box office in its second weekend. After a strong debut, the movie has now slipped to the fourth position on the North American box office chart. The drop comes as new releases like Thunderbolts and the continued strong performance of Sinners dominate the big screen. Another surprise entry into the top 3 is Minecraft: The Movie, which has picked up pace despite losing several theaters.
The Accountant 2 is the sequel to the 2016 hit film The Accountant, which was both a critical and commercial success. In this new installment, Ben Affleck returns as Christian Wolff, a math genius who uses his skills to solve the murder of a Treasury official. Jon Bernthal also reprises his role, adding to the film’s intense storyline. Interestingly, critics have given the sequel a better rating than the original, which boosted early expectations.
The movie opened in theaters on April 25 and debuted at #3 last weekend. However, according to Box Office Mojo, it fell to #4 in its second weekend, collecting $9.49 million. This marks a sharp 61.3% drop from its opening weekend earnings of $24.53 million, when it was shown across 3,610 theaters in the United States.
On the other hand, Minecraft: The Movie moved up the chart and claimed the #3 spot by earning $13.7 million. This is impressive, considering it lost around 270 theaters this weekend in the U.S. Clearly, audiences are more drawn to family-friendly or high-energy content right now.
Internationally, The Accountant 2 has done a bit better, earning $25.2 million. This brings its worldwide total to $66.37 million. The film was made on a budget of $80 million, so it has recovered about 83% of its production cost so far. While that’s a decent number, it still needs to make at least $14 million more to break even—and significantly more to become profitable. Experts estimate it would need to gross about $200 million worldwide to be considered a hit.
To make things even more challenging, two major releases—Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch—are hitting theatres later this month. These blockbusters will likely take over many screens and reduce the number of theaters still showing The Accountant 2. This could further slow down its earnings at the box office.
However, all hope is not lost for Ben Affleck’s film. It is expected to release soon on Amazon Prime Video, which could help it reach a wider audience and possibly make up for the lower box office returns. Streaming might play a big role in helping the movie recover its budget over time.
Despite the struggles, The Accountant 2 has received praise for its performances and gripping storyline. Fans of the first film are still showing support, and the digital release could give it a second life.
