Fans of Tamil cinema are excited as Suriya’s upcoming movie Retro is all set to release on May 1, 2025. This romantic action entertainer has been creating a lot of buzz online, especially after the latest revelation by the film’s director, Karthik Subbaraj.
In a recent interview, the Jigarthanda director shared a surprising fact about the film. He said that Retro was not originally written for Suriya, but for none other than Superstar Rajinikanth! This unexpected twist has caught the attention of both Suriya and Rajinikanth fans.
Karthik Subbaraj Clears the Air
There were many rumours that the script of Retro was first written with Thalapathy Vijay in mind. However, Karthik Subbaraj cleared up the confusion. He said, “This story was not written for Thalapathy Vijay sir, as being speculated. I wrote this script keeping in mind Thalaivar (Rajinikanth). Initially, it was more in the action zone to suit Thalaivar’s image.”
The director explained that the original version of the story was packed with mass action scenes that would match Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life personality on screen. But once he pitched the idea to Suriya, things changed.
Karthik added, “After narrating it to Suriya sir, it was changed to a love story. Even Suriya sir asked me if I had narrated the script to Rajinikanth sir.” That’s how the film transformed from a full action film into a romantic action drama with emotional depth.
What Retro is All About
Retro tells the story of Paarivel Kannan, a man full of emotions, who goes on a journey to reunite with his long-lost love, Rukmini. The movie is set in a vintage backdrop and combines love, stylized action, and emotional storytelling. The film has a nostalgic vibe with retro visuals and music.
Pooja Hegde plays the female lead, marking her first film with Suriya. The cast also includes talented actors like Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Sujith Shankar, and Singampuli. Actress Shriya Saran will be seen in a glamorous special song.
Music, Production, and Release Date
Retro is jointly produced by Suriya’s own banner, 2D Entertainment, and Karthik Subbaraj’s Stone Bench Creations. The music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, promising a powerful and emotional soundtrack that matches the film’s mood. The movie was earlier known as Suriya 44, but was later officially titled Retro.
The film is gearing up for a grand pan-India release in multiple languages on May 1, 2025. It is one of the most awaited Tamil movies of the year and is expected to be a major box office hit.
Rajinikanth’s Upcoming Projects
Meanwhile, Superstar Rajinikanth is busy with his next film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The movie features a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Upendra. He is also set to work on Jailer 2 with director Nelson Dilipkumar.
