Retro, starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde, was expected to be a big hit at the Indian box office. With a lot of buzz before its release and a good opening, many believed it would become a successful comeback for Suriya. However, the film couldn’t hold its momentum and has now turned into a big disappointment.
Strong Start, But No Steady Run
The film marked the first-ever collaboration between Suriya and director Karthik Subbaraj, which created high expectations among fans. Since it had a moderate budget and strong initial interest, many expected it to perform well. However, after a decent start, Retro began losing steam quickly.
In the ongoing third week, Retro’s performance has dropped even further. On its third Friday, it earned just ₹22 lakhs. On third Saturday, the number went even lower, earning less than ₹15 lakhs, indicating that the film is close to ending its theatrical run.
Day 17 Collection Report
As per Sacnilk, Retro has earned ₹60.04 crores net in India by the end of day 17. Including taxes, the film’s Indian gross stands at ₹70.84 crores. These numbers clearly show that the film is finding it hard to reach the break-even point.
Budget vs. Collection: Not a Profitable Deal
Retro was reportedly made on a budget of ₹65 crores. So far, the film has managed to earn only ₹60.04 crores in net collections. This means it still needs nearly ₹5 crores more to recover its production cost. Sadly, given its current slow performance, it seems impossible to cover the gap.
At this pace, even if the film adds another ₹2 crores during its remaining run, it will still fall short. This makes Retro yet another box office failure for Suriya, following the poor performance of his earlier film, Kanguva.
Will Miss ₹100 Crore Mark Globally
Initially, it looked like Retro would easily cross ₹100 crores at the worldwide box office. But now, that target is clearly out of reach. As of now, the film’s worldwide gross collection stands at ₹95.24 crores.
Here’s the detailed breakdown of its global earnings:
- India Net Collection – ₹60.04 crores
- India Gross Collection – ₹70.84 crores
- Overseas Gross Collection – ₹24.40 crores
- Worldwide Gross Total – ₹95.24 crores
Even though the film came close to the ₹100 crore mark, it won’t be able to cross it now, considering the sharp drop in collections.
Final Verdict
Retro had the right ingredients—popular stars, a well-known director, and strong pre-release hype. But in the end, weak word of mouth and lack of momentum ruined its chances. With collections falling fast, Retro will soon end its journey as a box office disappointment, both in India and globally.
