Salman Khan’s latest film Sikandar had sky-high expectations before its release. The film marked a major collaboration between Salman and popular director AR Murugadoss, and since it was released during the Eid holiday, many believed it would become a massive blockbuster. However, things didn’t go as planned.
Sikandar opened well at the Indian box office, but it couldn’t maintain the momentum. Due to negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth, the film’s performance quickly dropped. Although it crossed the 100 crore mark—which is considered a basic target for big films—it is now on its way out of theatres and will end its run very soon.
Sikandar Day 17 Box Office Collection in India
On its 17th day, Sikandar earned just ₹27 lakh, which is a very low number for a Salman Khan film. With this, the total Indian box office collection now stands at ₹129.08 crore net. The film is struggling to even reach the ₹135 crore mark. By Salman’s standards, this is a big underperformance, and Sikandar is now being labeled as one of his biggest flops in recent times.
Sikandar Crosses Akshay Kumar’s Hit Film Airlift
Despite the poor performance, Sikandar has still managed to beat one of Akshay Kumar’s successful films—Airlift. Released in 2016, Airlift was a huge hit and collected ₹129 crore net in India. It was made on a budget of ₹40 crore and delivered an impressive return on investment of ₹89 crore, which equals a 222.5% ROI. According to Koimoi’s box office rating, Airlift was given a “Super-Duper Hit” verdict and is ranked as Akshay’s 11th highest-grossing film.
Now, with Sikandar collecting ₹129.08 crore, it has slightly surpassed Airlift’s lifetime total. This is a small victory for the film in an otherwise disappointing run.
More Films Sikandar Might Beat Before Its End
Although Sikandar is almost done with its theatrical run, there’s a small chance it might go ahead of a few more films. Next in line is Stree, the 2018 horror-comedy starring Shraddha Kapoor, which earned ₹129.67 crore in India. After that, there’s Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore, which made ₹131 crore.
If Sikandar manages to stay in theatres for a few more days and earns just a little more, it could cross both Stree and Rowdy Rathore. But even if it does, the film will still be seen as a box office failure, especially for a star like Salman Khan.
Final Words
Sikandar might have missed the mark in terms of audience expectations and overall earnings, but crossing the total of a successful film like Airlift shows that even a flop Salman Khan movie can still pull in decent numbers. While it didn’t become the blockbuster fans were hoping for, it still made a mark in the list of top-grossing films—at least in terms of numbers.
