Ryan Reynolds and T.J. Miller Once Wrote a Deadpool Scene Too Shocking for Even an R-Rated Movie
Ryan Reynolds pushed boundaries with Deadpool, but some things were just too much—even for the R-rated superhero movie. Before Deadpool hit the big screen in 2016, Reynolds and co-star T.J. Miller came up with a scene that was so outrageous, it never made it past the script.
Director Tim Miller shared the story in an interview with Looper. According to him, there was a bar scene written by Reynolds and Miller that went way too far, even for Deadpool. Considering the movie already featured intense violence, strong language, and adult jokes, that says a lot.
“In particular, there was a bar scene that was too vulgar for even the R-rated Deadpool,” Miller explained. The dialogue in the scene reportedly started off as edgy humor but quickly turned into something that could offend “massive amounts of people.” It wasn’t just dark or inappropriate—it was hateful, and the team decided to cut it immediately. It was so offensive that the cast and crew never even rehearsed it. No one has ever revealed the full details, which shows how extreme it must have been.
Still, Deadpool was never supposed to be a family-friendly movie. When it was released in 2016, it shocked audiences with its bloody action scenes, dirty jokes, and its main character’s habit of talking directly to the audience. Critics loved it for flipping the superhero formula. Collider even joked that it had “enough bloodshed to make Quentin Tarantino blush.”
Even though the film embraced chaos and dark comedy, director Tim Miller knew there had to be limits. The banned bar scene wasn’t the only thing cut from the movie. According to reports, other scenes filled with extreme violence or over-the-top jokes were also removed during production.
But those bold creative choices paid off. Deadpool became a huge success, making $783 million at the global box office. Its sequel, Deadpool 2, did even better, earning $785 million. The success proved that fans were ready for R-rated superhero movies—and Ryan Reynolds became the perfect face for this new, wild kind of comic book film.
Later, when Disney bought 20th Century Fox, fans were nervous. Would Disney force Deadpool to tone things down? Would the character have to fit into the more family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Luckily, that didn’t happen. The next Deadpool film has been confirmed, and yes—it’s staying R-rated. It will even be the first R-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Disney took over.
As for that banned bar scene? It lives on as a behind-the-scenes legend. No one knows exactly what was in it, and maybe that’s for the best. Even for a film known for breaking the rules, Reynolds and Miller understood that some lines should never be crossed.
Sometimes, the most powerful moments are the ones we never see.
