Ryan Coogler’s horror film Sinners may have slipped to the #2 spot in the domestic box office after Marvel’s Thunderbolts debuted this weekend, but its performance is still impressively strong. The film continues to hold a powerful presence in theaters and is outperforming expectations globally.
Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, has become a major success worldwide. It opened in the U.S. with a solid $48 million and has now reached $179.83 million domestically. Even in its third weekend, the film pulled in $33.1 million, showing only a small drop of 27.6% compared to last weekend. That’s a very healthy hold for a horror movie. The film is playing in 3,347 theatres across North America.
This strong performance makes Sinners the third highest-grossing film of the year in the U.S., overtaking titles like Snow White and Dog Man. That’s a big win for Ryan Coogler and the team.
The movie is also doing well overseas. According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, international earnings for Sinners in its third weekend came in at $10.9 million—slightly higher than earlier estimates. The film only dropped 21.6% overseas, which shows that audiences around the world are loving it too. So far, it has made $57.5 million in 71 international markets.
Adding up both domestic and international earnings, Sinners has now made a total of $237.3 million globally. The film is expected to soon pass The Nun 2’s $269.8 million total, making it the fifth highest-grossing horror film released after the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the main reasons for the movie’s success is its strong word-of-mouth. Both critics and audiences are praising it. On Rotten Tomatoes, Sinners has a stunning 98% critic score and a 97% audience score. The critic consensus says the movie is a thrilling mix of creative storytelling, powerful visuals, and catchy music. That kind of love from both sides is rare for a horror movie.
Directed and written by Ryan Coogler, Sinners is his first original horror blockbuster. The film had a production budget of $90 million, and it has already made 163.7% more than that. That means it’s now in solid profit territory.
Released on April 18, Sinners is expected to finish its global theatrical run somewhere between $330 million and $400 million, if it keeps this momentum. With a unique concept and strong performances, the film is proving that original horror stories can still draw huge crowds worldwide.
While Thunderbolts may have taken the top box office spot for now, Sinners is still a massive win for Ryan Coogler and a standout success in the horror genre.
