Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s new horror film, Sinners, is off to an impressive start at the North American box office.

Released on April 18, Sinners topped the domestic charts on its opening day, collecting $19.2 million on Friday alone. It has officially beaten the third Friday numbers of A Minecraft Movie and now holds the #1 spot in theaters.

The film has received rave reviews from both critics and audiences. It holds a 98% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 97% audience score, making it Certified Fresh and Verified Hot. Critics praised Coogler’s original vision, calling it “a rip-roaring fusion of masterful visual storytelling and toe-tapping music.”

According to Luiz Fernando’s report, Sinners now has the second-highest Friday opening for an original horror film post-COVID, just behind Jordan Peele’s Nope, which earned $19.5 million. It also slightly trails A Quiet Place: Part II ($19.4M) and Scream VI ($19.3M). However, if we remove Thursday preview earnings, Sinners pulled in $14.5 million, beating Nope’s pure Friday figure of $12.8 million.

The movie is currently eyeing a weekend total of $45 million to $50 million, which would make it one of the biggest original horror openings in recent years.

On top of that, Sinners scored an A on CinemaScore, showing strong word-of-mouth potential.

Michael B. Jordan takes on dual roles in the film, joined by a star-studded cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Buddy Guy, and Delroy Lindo.

The story follows twin brothers who return to their hometown in hopes of starting over, only to face an even darker force from their past.

Sinners is now playing in theaters. Don’t miss this thrilling horror experience from the visionary director of Black Panther.
