Suriya and Pooja Hegde’s romantic action drama Retro had a strong start at the box office, but things have gone downhill since then. Despite a powerful opening day, the film’s performance started dipping due to poor word-of-mouth and tough competition from other releases. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Retro is still trying to stay steady, but the journey hasn’t been easy. Let’s look at how the film performed on day 14 and its overall box office status.

Day 14 Box Office Collection

Retro earned an estimated ₹52 lakhs on its 14th day (Thursday), according to data from Sacnilk. This marks a 19% drop compared to the ₹64 lakhs it earned on the previous Thursday (day 9). The film continues to struggle in its second week as audiences seem to be choosing other movies instead.

The total 14-day box office collection now stands at ₹59.30 crores net (all languages combined—Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi). Including taxes, the gross collection reaches ₹69.97 crores.

Budget and Recovery

Retro was made on a reported budget of ₹65 crores. With ₹59.30 crores already earned at the Indian box office in 14 days, the film has recovered about 91% of its production cost. It now needs to earn around ₹5.70 crores more to break even completely.

If the film shows a little growth over the upcoming weekend, there’s a good chance it can recover its full budget. This would be a relief for the makers, who might still be able to label it a “moderate success.”

Tough Road Ahead

The biggest challenge for Retro is its competition. Several other films are currently running in theaters, and with Retro receiving mixed to negative reviews, attracting audiences is becoming harder. Without strong word-of-mouth or a jump in weekend collections, the film might wrap up its theatrical run soon.

Missing Out on Top 3

Despite its solid opening, Retro is unlikely to make it to the top 3 highest-grossing Tamil films of 2025. As of now, it holds the 4th position on the list. The third position is held by Vidaamuyarchi, which has collected ₹81.58 crores. The gap of over ₹22 crores is simply too large for Retro to cover in its final days at the box office.

Top 5 Highest-Grossing Tamil Films of 2025 (India)

  1. Good Bad Ugly – ₹153.71 crores*
  2. Dragon – ₹102.55 crores
  3. Vidaamuyarchi – ₹81.58 crores
  4. Retro – ₹59.30 crores*
  5. Madha Gaja Raja – ₹48.70 crores

Final Thoughts

Retro may not become a blockbuster, but it still has a shot at being a commercially safe film if it manages to cover its final ₹5.70 crores in the coming days. With its current pace, though, entering the top 3 is no longer a realistic goal.
