The release of Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s upcoming film Bhool Chuk Maaf is currently stuck in legal trouble. The film was supposed to hit theatres on May 9, 2025, but now its future is uncertain due to a conflict between the production house Maddock Films and cinema chain PVR Inox.

Why Is the Release of Bhool Chuk Maaf Delayed?

Last week, Maddock Films announced that Bhool Chuk Maaf would skip its theatrical release and go straight to OTT. The makers decided to release the film on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. This decision was made after the recent increase in security alerts across India following Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam.

Citing safety concerns and the tense situation between India and Pakistan, the production team believed it would be best to release the film directly online instead of in cinemas.

PVR Inox Files a Lawsuit Against Maddock Films

However, PVR Inox disagreed with this decision and took legal action. According to them, Maddock Films had signed an agreement promising that the movie would first be released in theatres and then on OTT platforms only after an 8-week gap. This is known as the “theatrical window”, which helps cinemas have an exclusive run before films go online.

PVR Inox claimed that skipping the theatre release would be a breach of contract. They approached the Bombay High Court, which has now stopped Maddock Films from releasing the movie on any platform until the 8-week theatrical window is complete.

The court said that Maddock Films cannot release the movie anywhere—including OTT—until the agreed holdback period is over. The next court hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 16, 2025.

What Is Bhool Chuk Maaf About?

Bhool Chuk Maaf is a romantic comedy directed by Karan Sharma. The film is set in the vibrant city of Varanasi and tells the story of Ranjan, played by Rajkummar Rao. Ranjan is a sweet, hopeless romantic who finally lands a stable government job to impress and marry his dream girl, Titli, played by Wamiqa Gabbi.

Just a day before the wedding, something strange happens. On the night of his haldi ceremony, Ranjan goes to sleep feeling excited. But when he wakes up, it’s haldi day all over again. This confusing loop keeps repeating, and he realises that he’s stuck in a time loop on the day before his wedding.

Now, Ranjan must figure out what went wrong. Why is he stuck? What message is the universe—or Lord Mahadev—trying to send him? And most importantly, how can he escape the loop and finally marry Titli?

What’s Next?

As of now, the film’s release date is on hold. Whether it will come to theatres first or go to streaming later depends on the outcome of the legal case. Fans of Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi will have to wait a little longer to watch this unique and funny romantic drama.
