Actors Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa are all set for the release of their upcoming film Phule, based on the lives of social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film has generated buzz not just because of its powerful subject but also due to some controversy surrounding its release. Certain groups in the country have opposed the film, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) even asked the filmmakers to make several changes before approving it. As a result, the film’s release date had to be postponed.
In an exclusive chat with Filmfare, Pratik Gandhi spoke about the pressure and responsibility that comes with portraying real-life historical figures like Jyotirao Phule. He also opened up about the emotional journey of playing such an important role.
When asked if he felt any fear while playing a historical character, Pratik said, “It’s not about fear. It’s more about responsibility. When you play real-life heroes like Jyotirao Phule or Mahatma Gandhi, your job is to stick to the truth. You must not change facts just for the sake of it.”
Pratik stressed that actors should avoid changing history either because they don’t fully understand it or because they want to please someone. “You can’t and shouldn’t do that. If you do, you’re doing a huge disservice to your audience and future generations. That’s something I want to stay away from. It’s a basic responsibility and discipline every actor should have,” he added.
The actor also spoke about how emotionally intense it was to film Phule, especially since it portrays a time when discrimination and inequality were part of daily life. “When you read the story or watch it, it feels very heavy. But when we were performing, we had to remind ourselves that this was a normal life back then. People lived through that pain every single day. They were used to it. That’s what makes it even more powerful,” Pratik explained.
He said that the emotional weight of the story naturally came through in their performances. “We didn’t try to make it overly dramatic. We wanted to show how they fought against the system with strength and courage. It was their way of life, and we had to respect that while acting.”
Phule is expected to shed light on the inspiring journey of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, who dedicated their lives to fighting for social equality, education for women, and the rights of the marginalized. With powerful performances and a meaningful message, the film promises to be a thought-provoking watch.
While the release may have faced challenges, the film’s core message and historical importance remain strong. Audiences are eagerly waiting to witness this powerful story on the big screen.
