Mohanlal’s much-awaited film L2: Empuraan is now ready for its OTT release. The announcement was made by the lead actor himself through social media, much to the excitement of fans. After facing several challenges before and after its theatrical release, the film is finally coming to streaming.
L2: Empuraan – A Bumpy Ride Before Release
The journey of L2: Empuraan hasn’t been easy. Even before it hit theatres, there were issues between the production companies involved — Lyca Productions and Aashirvad Cinemas. These disagreements almost delayed the release of the movie. However, Sree Gokulam Movies came to the rescue and made sure the film reached theatres on time.
But the problems didn’t end there. After the movie’s theatrical release, L2: Empuraan faced criticism for its violent content and the way it portrayed certain historical events. Due to this backlash, the makers decided to edit some scenes. A revised version of the movie was released in cinemas five days after the initial release. This edited version is expected to be the one releasing on OTT.
What is L2: Empuraan About?
L2: Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. While the first movie focused more on Kerala’s politics, the second part expands its story beyond state borders. The film is set five years after the events of Lucifer.
Mohanlal returns as Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi-Ab’raam. His character has disappeared from Kerala, and neither the people nor his close family members know where he is. In his absence, Jathin Ramdas, played by Tovino Thomas, has taken control of the state. However, his leadership style has become more dictatorial, and allegations of corruption are rising. Even his own party members are unhappy with him.
Meanwhile, Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Zayed Masood, who was once close to Stephen. The film explores how Zayed became Stephen’s trusted aide and digs deeper into his backstory. Although the movie doesn’t show Stephen’s full journey from a Kerala orphan to a global crime boss, it does highlight the international conflicts involving his criminal empire.
The movie is packed with high-octane action, stunning visuals, and thrilling moments that match Hollywood standards.

L2: Empuraan was released in theatres on March 27, 2025. Now, fans can catch the action from home as the film is set to stream on JioHotstar starting April 24, 2025 — exactly four weeks after its theatrical debut.
