L2: Empuraan Box Office Collection – Final Stage of Theatrical Run
Mohanlal’s big-budget film L2: Empuraan is now in the final phase of its theatrical journey. The movie, which was released with huge expectations, is slowly making its way out of cinemas. In about a week, it will be almost completely out of theatres. Even though it did well overall, the film will fall short of a major milestone at the Indian box office.
A few days ago, L2: Empuraan became only the second Malayalam film to earn over ₹100 crore net in India across all languages. However, when we look at the Malayalam version alone, the film will not reach the ₹100 crore club.
Strong Start but Mixed Reviews Affected the Run
When L2: Empuraan hit theatres on March 27, it opened to a massive response. The buzz around the film, combined with Mohanlal’s stardom, helped it earn big numbers in the first week. But the momentum didn’t last long. Due to mixed reviews and average word-of-mouth, the collections started to drop after the initial days.
On day 28, the film earned just ₹9 lakh, which is lower than its ₹12 lakh collection on day 27. The slowdown in ticket sales has made it almost impossible for the film to cover the gap needed to hit ₹100 crore in the Malayalam version alone.
Total Collection So Far
As per the latest report by Sacnilk, L2: Empuraan has earned a total of ₹106.52 crore net in India from all versions. However, when it comes to just the Malayalam version, the film has collected ₹97.23 crore net. That means it is just ₹2.77 crore away from the ₹100 crore mark—but with the current pace, it is unlikely to close that gap.
A Missed Opportunity for a Rare Milestone
So far, only one Malayalam film—Manjummel Boys—has entered the ₹100 crore club purely through its Malayalam version. With the excitement around L2: Empuraan, many expected it to become the second film to do so. Unfortunately, the drop in audience turnout has dashed those hopes.
It’s a missed chance for the team, especially since reaching ₹100 crore in the Malayalam version is a rare feat. It might take some time before another Malayalam film comes close to this achievement again.
About the Film
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2: Empuraan is the sequel to Lucifer and features a star-studded cast including Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Tovino Thomas, and Manju Warrier. The film was made on a massive budget of ₹180 crore and had high expectations to match its scale.
While the overall performance is still impressive, the Malayalam film industry will now have to wait for the next big hit to cross the ₹100 crore mark in the original language.
