The Mission: Impossible movie series is coming to an end with its final film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This will be the last time we see Tom Cruise playing the role of Ethan Hunt in this high-octane action franchise. After the last movie didn’t do as well as expected at the box office, there’s a lot riding on this upcoming installment. With a massive budget of around $400 million, this is one of the most expensive movies ever made in Hollywood.
Tom Cruise has always been known for doing his own jaw-dropping stunts. Whether it’s hanging off a flying airplane or climbing the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, his scenes have left audiences stunned. Fans all over the world eagerly wait for these adrenaline-filled moments in every Mission: Impossible movie. The franchise has made more than $3.5 billion at the global box office, proving its wide appeal.
According to Box Office Mojo, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which came out in 2018, holds the record for the biggest opening weekend in North America for the series. It made $61.23 million in just three days. Now, early predictions for The Final Reckoning suggest that it will beat Fallout’s opening weekend record, with expected earnings of over $60 million in its first three days.
The movie is scheduled to be released on May 23, during the Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. This means it will enjoy a long, four-day opening weekend, which could help boost ticket sales even more. It will be released alongside Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, but since they target different audiences, there likely won’t be much competition between the two.
However, because of its huge $400 million budget, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will need to earn around $1 billion globally just to break even. That’s a big target, but the franchise has a strong fanbase, and with all the hype surrounding this being the final film, there’s a good chance it will deliver.
Here’s a look at the top opening weekends from previous Mission: Impossible movies:
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout – $61.23 million
- Mission: Impossible II – $57.84 million
- Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – $55.52 million
- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – $54.68 million
- Mission: Impossible III – $47.74 million
- Mission: Impossible – $45.43 million
- Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – $12.78 million
The final film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and brings back familiar faces like Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, and Rolf Saxon. These characters have been part of the franchise in earlier films, and fans will be excited to see them all together one last time.
As Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning gears up for its big release, the excitement is building. Can Tom Cruise deliver one last hit as Ethan Hunt and help the film earn the big bucks it needs? We’ll find out when it hits theaters on May 23, 2025.
