The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is facing some tough competition at the box office this month. Marvel’s latest release Thunderbolts has seen a big drop in collections on its second Thursday. The superhero film, which was leading the box office earlier, has now lost its #1 spot to the horror film Sinners. And things might get worse for Marvel, as Final Destination: Bloodlines has just hit theatres with strong momentum and is expected to debut at the top.

Final Destination: Bloodlines has received amazing reviews from both fans and critics. With high ratings and positive word of mouth, the movie is expected to dominate the box office over the coming days. It’s not just a threat to Thunderbolts, but also a direct rival to Sinners, which has been holding up well so far. However, despite the competition, Sinners is still performing strongly at the box office.

Meanwhile, Thunderbolts is now seeing the pressure of competition. According to Box Office Mojo, the film collected only $2.1 million on its second Thursday, marking a 51.2% drop compared to the previous Thursday. The movie has now slipped to the second position on the domestic chart. Interestingly, this is the same second Thursday collection as The Incredible Hulk back in the day.

Still, not all is bad news for the Florence Pugh-led Marvel film. Thunderbolts has managed to beat the second Thursday numbers of Captain America: Brave New World (which earned $1.5 million, with a 53.6% drop) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (which also made $1.5 million but dropped 61.4%).

The other MCU movie currently running in theatres, The New Avengers, has reached a domestic total of $138.9 million. It’s expected to cross the $150 million mark this weekend. The film recently passed the North American box office total of Thor and could finish its domestic run with earnings between $195 million and $210 million.

Internationally, The New Avengers has earned $143.55 million so far. This brings its worldwide total to $282.4 million. On the other hand, Thunderbolts is also expected to cross the $300 million mark globally this weekend. However, its international numbers might slow down, as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has started releasing in global markets. Final Destination: Bloodlines has also launched worldwide and will likely take a share of the audience.

One of the highlights of Thunderbolts is the introduction of the character Sentry, also known as Void or Bob. The film explores mental health, especially depression, which adds a deeper theme to the superhero action. This emotional storyline has been appreciated by many viewers.

The New Avengers was released in theatres on May 2 and continues to perform well despite growing competition. But with several new films hitting the screens, the next few days will be crucial for the MCU at the box office.
