Marvel Studios’ latest film, Thunderbolts (also titled The New Avengers), is putting up a strong fight at the box office, even as big movies like Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch enter theaters. While it hasn’t broken any major records yet, the movie is showing steady performance and staying in the top 5 spots at the US box office.

Thunderbolts* (The New Avengers) Box Office Performance So Far

The film, starring Florence Pugh and Lewis Pullman, collected $2.4 million on its fourth Friday. This helped it hold onto the number 5 spot in the domestic box office rankings, according to Box Office Mojo. However, it experienced a 43.7% drop in earnings compared to last Friday, and it also lost 780 screens this week across the United States.

Despite these setbacks, Thunderbolts has now earned a total of $164.6 million in the domestic market. It is just under $1 million short of overtaking Marvel’s Eternals, which made $164.9 million at the North American box office. With its fourth weekend still ongoing, the movie is expected to earn between $8.5 million and $9.5 million from Friday to Sunday.

Global Box Office Update

Internationally, the movie is doing just as well as it is in the US. So far, Thunderbolts has made $170.7 million overseas, bringing its total worldwide collection to $335.32 million. If it continues at this pace, it could cross the $350 million mark globally by the end of the weekend.

However, reaching the $400 million milestone or beyond seems difficult. The movie is now facing strong competition from new releases, and some fans believe that the disappointment of past MCU films is affecting its box office performance. Even so, Thunderbolts is receiving good reviews from critics and audiences, which may help keep it in theaters longer.

Why the Asterisk in Thunderbolts*?

When Thunderbolts first released, fans were curious about the asterisk in the title. Marvel Studios has since explained that the asterisk hints at the movie’s true title reveal, which is The New Avengers. The reveal was part of a surprise twist in the film’s storyline. The movie officially hit theaters on May 2, 2025.

Box Office Summary

  • Fourth Friday Collection: $2.4 million
  • 3rd Weekend Collection: $16.6 million
  • Total Domestic Gross: $164.6 million
  • Total Worldwide Gross: $335.32 million

Final Thoughts

While Thunderbolts (aka The New Avengers) might not be a box office giant like earlier MCU hits, it’s still holding its ground well. With solid word-of-mouth and positive reviews, the movie could enjoy a longer run, even as competition heats up.

Stay tuned to see if it can cross the $350 million mark this weekend.
