Maranamass, the Malayalam black comedy film starring Basil Joseph and Rajesh Madhavan, has ended its theatrical run on a highly successful note. Despite releasing on the same day as Alappuzha Gymkhana and Bazooka, the film managed to grab attention and perform well at the Indian box office. It not only recovered its budget but also delivered over 100% returns, earning the status of a Hit.
Positive Start and Strong Word-of-Mouth
Directed by Sivaprasad, Maranamass hit theatres on April 10, 2025. Right from the start, it received mostly positive reviews from critics. The film was praised for its unique direction, engaging storyline, and especially for Basil Joseph’s brilliant performance. Its dark humor and clever writing appealed to both critics and audiences.
The good word-of-mouth helped the film stay strong even after the initial weekend. While some films fade out after the first few days, Maranamass remained stable at the box office, thanks to the support from viewers and positive reviews.
Box Office Collection Report
Over its run of more than a month, Maranamass collected an impressive ₹18.77 crore net at the Indian box office. When you include taxes, the total gross collection stands at ₹22.14 crore. What’s more impressive is that the film had a modest opening of just ₹1 crore, meaning it multiplied its day-one collection by more than 18 times during its entire run. This kind of growth is rare and shows how well the film connected with audiences over time.
Budget and Profit
Maranamass was made on a budget of just ₹8 crore, which is considered a controlled or small budget in the film industry. With ₹18.77 crore net in earnings, the movie made a profit of around ₹10.77 crore, giving it a Return on Investment (ROI) of 134.62%. According to Koimoi’s box office verdict system, any film with more than 100% ROI is declared a Hit, so Maranamass has officially ended its theatrical journey with a Hit tag.
Star Cast and Crew
Besides Basil Joseph and Rajesh Madhavan, the film also features Siju Sunny, Babu Antony, and Suresh Krishna in important roles. The film was jointly produced by Tovino Thomas Productions, Rapheal Productions, and World Wide Films.
Digital Release on Sony LIV
If you missed watching Maranamass in theatres, here’s some good news. The film will start streaming online on Sony LIV from Thursday, May 15, 2025. And it’s not just the original Malayalam version – the film will also be available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, making it accessible to a larger audience across India.
Given the film’s popularity during its theatrical run, expectations are high for its performance on OTT platforms. With a strong mix of humor, satire, and suspense, Maranamass is likely to become a hit in the digital space as well.
