L2: Empuraan, the much-awaited Malayalam action thriller starring Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, and Tovino Thomas, is now in the final stage of its theatrical run. After completing four weeks in cinemas, the film has clearly lost momentum and is slowly wrapping up its journey at the box office. While it started strong, the movie has now missed out on reaching one big milestone globally.
Blockbuster Opening, But Fizzled Out Later
From day one, L2: Empuraan had massive buzz among fans. Backed by strong promotions and a star-studded cast, the film opened to record-breaking numbers. In fact, it even managed to surpass the lifetime collection of Manjummel Boys, becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
However, despite the historic opening, the film couldn’t keep up the same pace. After the first two weeks, collections dropped significantly. This was mainly due to mixed reviews and word-of-mouth, which affected the film’s performance in its later stages.
Day 29 and 4-Week Total Collection
As of day 29, L2: Empuraan earned just ₹5 lakh at the Indian box office. This brings its 4-week Indian net collection to ₹106.57 crore. Including taxes, the Indian gross collection stands at ₹125.75 crore.
The film has done exceptionally well overseas, collecting ₹142.25 crore gross from international markets. When we combine both domestic and international numbers, the film’s worldwide box office collection stands at ₹268 crore gross.
Box Office Breakdown:
- India Net: ₹106.57 crore
- India Gross: ₹125.75 crore
- Overseas Gross: ₹142.25 crore
- Worldwide Gross: ₹268 crore
Missed the 275 Crore Milestone
Even though L2: Empuraan has already made history by becoming the first Malayalam film to cross ₹250 crore globally, fans were hoping it could go even further. Many believed it had a real shot at ₹275 crore or even ₹300 crore, especially after its explosive start.
Unfortunately, that won’t happen now. After a sharp decline in collections, it’s estimated that the film will end its theatrical run with a worldwide total of around ₹269–270 crore gross. So, the ₹275 crore milestone will be missed by a small margin.
Final Thoughts
L2: Empuraan may have slowed down in the last two weeks, but it has still created history in the Malayalam film industry. With a massive worldwide total of ₹268 crore gross, it has set new standards for Malayalam cinema. The movie’s success, especially in overseas markets, proves that regional films can achieve global recognition when they connect with the audience.
Even though it couldn’t reach ₹275 crore, the film’s performance is still a big win for the makers and fans. All eyes are now on the next big release to see if it can break this new benchmark.
