L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, has had an incredible run at the box office. The Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer created history by crossing the ₹100 crore mark in just 10 days—something rarely seen in Malayalam cinema. But despite this flying start, the film is now struggling to keep up its momentum and is unlikely to beat the all-time Malayalam hit Manjummel Boys in the long run.

Day 16 Box Office Collection: A Sharp Drop

As of its 16th day in theatres, L2: Empuraan is witnessing a significant fall in box office collections. On its third Thursday, the film managed to earn only ₹16 lakhs, which is a steep 93% drop compared to its earnings of ₹94 lakhs just the day before. With this, the total India net box office collection now stands at ₹103.28 crore.

L2: Empuraan vs Manjummel Boys – 16-Day Comparison

While L2: Empuraan had a fast-paced start, Manjummel Boys followed a slower but steady path. The survival drama starring Soubin Shahir took its time, running in theatres for over six weeks. In its first 16 days, Manjummel Boys collected ₹50.72 crore, which is much lower compared to L2. However, the film stayed strong in the following weeks and became the highest-grossing Malayalam movie ever with a lifetime total of ₹142 crore.

L2: Empuraan is currently 103% ahead of Manjummel Boys in 16-day collections, but experts believe it has reached its peak. The rapid drop in earnings suggests that it may not have the long-lasting pull needed to overtake Manjummel Boys in lifetime collections.

Budget and Profit: Has L2: Empuraan Recovered Its Costs?

L2: Empuraan was a big-budget film, with an estimated production cost of ₹180 crore. Despite reaching several milestones in terms of earnings, it has only recovered around 57.37% of its budget so far. That means the film still has a long way to go to be considered a box office success. If it continues to decline at this rate, it may sadly end up being labeled a flop, despite its strong start.

Worldwide Box Office Collection of L2: Empuraan (16 Days)

Here’s a breakdown of the film’s performance across the globe:

  • India net: ₹103.28 crore
  • India gross: ₹121.87 crore
  • Overseas gross: ₹146 crore
  • Total worldwide gross: ₹267.87 crore

Even though the worldwide collection is impressive, it isn’t enough when compared to the film’s massive budget and expectations.

Final Verdict

L2: Empuraan had one of the best openings in Malayalam cinema history. But the early excitement seems to be fading fast. With collections dropping sharply, the film might not be able to maintain its box office run for much longer. Meanwhile, Manjummel Boys continues to enjoy its record-breaking status.
