Mohanlal and Trisha Krishnan’s Malayalam biggie L2: Empuraan may be seeing a drop in collections at the box office, but it is still pulling in audiences and adding to its total. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film has become the second highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2025. However, full budget recovery seems unlikely due to its massive cost. Here’s a look at how the film has performed in 19 days.
A Small Boost on Sunday
L2: Empuraan saw a slight rise in collections on its third Sunday at the box office. It earned ₹39 lakhs on Sunday, thanks to the weekend and the Ambedkar Jayanti holiday on Monday. This helped the film collect ₹62 lakhs on Day 19, which is a 59% increase from the previous day.
Total Box Office Collection in 19 Days
After 19 days, L2: Empuraan has made a total of ₹104.78 crores (net) at the Indian box office. When including taxes, the gross collection stands at ₹123.64 crores. This makes it one of the biggest Malayalam hits ever, only behind Manjummel Boys, which made ₹142 crores.
Compared to Mohanlal’s Previous Hit
Mohanlal’s last big hit was the 2023 courtroom drama Neru, which earned ₹32.35 crores during its entire run. In comparison, L2: Empuraan has collected nearly 282% more in just 19 days. This shows how well the sequel to Lucifer has performed, despite its recent slowdown.
Huge Budget, Partial Recovery
One of the biggest challenges for L2: Empuraan is its high budget. The movie was made on a huge scale, with a production cost of around ₹180 crores, making it the most expensive Malayalam film ever made. So far, the makers have recovered about 68% of the total investment. This means the film is unlikely to break even, even though it’s a major box office success in terms of numbers.
Why It May Not Reach #1
Even though L2: Empuraan has done very well, it won’t be able to beat Manjummel Boys, which is still far ahead in collections. Also, since the film is nearing the end of its theatrical run and daily collections are now under ₹1 crore, there’s little chance for a major boost in numbers from here.
Facing Tough Competition
New Malayalam releases like Bazooka, Alappuzha Gymkhana, and Maranamass have hit theatres recently and are doing well. These films have taken over many screens that were previously showing L2: Empuraan, affecting its overall performance. With fresh content attracting audiences, Empuraan is slowly losing its momentum at the box office.
Final Thoughts
Despite the slowdown, L2: Empuraan has had a fantastic run at the box office. It set new records and gave Malayalam cinema one of its grandest films ever. While it may not achieve full budget recovery or become the highest grosser, it will be remembered as a landmark movie in Mohanlal’s career and in Mollywood history.
