L2: Empuraan, the highly anticipated sequel to Lucifer, is the most expensive Malayalam movie ever made. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring superstar Mohanlal, the film made a strong start at the box office and has become the highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide. However, when it comes to India, the numbers are not as impressive as expected.
L2: Empuraan Day 17 Box Office Collection
On its 17th day, which was a Saturday, L2: Empuraan showed some signs of improvement. After a massive drop on Friday, where the movie earned just ₹16 lakhs, Saturday brought a little hope. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film collected ₹43 lakhs on day 17. This is a growth of around 168% from the previous day.
Still, this growth may not be enough to save the film financially. With a reported budget much higher than most Malayalam films, L2: Empuraan has earned ₹103.71 crores in India across all languages in 17 days. But to break even, it still needs to make around ₹76 crores more, which now seems nearly impossible. With the theatrical run coming to an end soon, the chances of recovery are low.
Will End as the Second-Highest Malayalam Grosser
Despite the struggle in India, L2: Empuraan has managed to beat several other Malayalam releases this year. The film has already crossed the lifetime box office collections of movies like Officer On Duty, Rekhachithram, Ponman, and Identity.
But it is still behind Manjummel Boys, which is currently the top Malayalam grosser of 2025 with a massive ₹142 crore net in India. Given the current pace of collections, Empuraan is expected to end its run as the second-highest Malayalam grosser this year.
Malayalam Films Box Office Rankings – 2025 (India)
Here’s a look at the top 5 Malayalam films of 2025 based on their Indian box office collections:
- L2: Empuraan – ₹103.71 crores*
- Officer On Duty – ₹31.60 crores
- Rekhachithram – ₹27 crores
- Ponman – ₹10.15 crores
- Dominic And The Ladies’ Purse – ₹9.29 crores
*Estimates. Official figures are still awaited.
Interestingly, L2: Empuraan has collected 228% more than the second film on the list, setting a new benchmark for Mollywood in terms of scale and reach. However, the film’s huge budget has made it difficult to call this box office journey a complete success.
Final Verdict
L2: Empuraan may not have lived up to its expectations in the Indian market, but it still made a mark globally and created history as the most expensive and highest-grossing Malayalam movie worldwide. Even though it couldn’t reach the top spot in India, it will be remembered for its ambition and star power.
