L2: Empuraan, the much-awaited sequel to Lucifer, began its box office journey with a bang. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal in the lead, the movie opened to massive crowds and quickly became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025. But as it enters its final week in theatres, the collections are slowly going down.
L2: Empuraan Box Office Collection Day 23
On its 23rd day, L2: Empuraan collected around ₹31 lakhs at the Indian box office, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. This marks a 40% jump compared to the previous day, thanks to the fourth Friday giving it a slight boost. The film mostly saw footfalls in the Malayalam-speaking regions, while its run in Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Tamil has nearly come to an end.
The total box office collection in India now stands at ₹105.79 crores. Even though that’s a big number, it’s still far from recovering its massive budget.
L2: Empuraan Is the Most Expensive Malayalam Movie Ever
With a production cost of ₹180 crores, L2: Empuraan is the costliest Malayalam movie ever made. So far, the makers have only recovered about 59% of the budget from the Indian box office. This means that even though the film was a big theatrical hit, it has not been able to break even in terms of cost.
If the budget had been lower, this movie would have been a blockbuster hit for Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and the Malayalam film industry. However, due to high production costs, the film may end up being a loss-making project in theatres.
L2: Empuraan OTT Release Date
There’s good news for fans who missed the movie in theatres. L2: Empuraan is all set to release on the OTT platform JioHotstar on April 24, 2025. With just a few days left, the film’s theatrical run is expected to end next week.
The digital release will give the film another chance to recover money through streaming rights and may help the makers minimize losses. OTT is now becoming a major source of revenue for big-budget Indian films, especially those with pan-India appeal.
