Pop star Katy Perry recently made headlines, not for her music, but for a journey beyond Earth. She joined a group of inspiring women on a space trip with Blue Origin, the space company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The mission was an exciting 11-minute flight that took the crew past the Karman Line, which is widely considered the edge of space.

Along with Katy Perry, the crew included TV host Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez (fiancée of Jeff Bezos), engineer Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, and businesswoman Kerianne Flynn. The rocket, named New Shepard, took off at 8:30 a.m. from West Texas and returned safely after the short but thrilling trip.

New Shepard is a fully automated, reusable rocket built for space tourism. It’s designed to give people a chance to experience space without needing years of astronaut training. The rocket took the crew to an altitude of over 100 kilometers, where they floated for a few moments in zero gravity, enjoying the view of Earth from above.

Katy Perry Sings from Space

While in space, the crew shared a unique moment together. Katy Perry, known for hits like Roar, Firework, and E.T., chose to sing “What A Wonderful World” instead of one of her own songs. Her teammates encouraged her to sing one of her hits, but Perry had a bigger message in mind.

“This moment isn’t about me,” she said. “It’s about all of us. It’s about showing that women belong in space. It’s about making space for future generations of women. It’s also about seeing how beautiful our world is and learning to care for it more.”

Critics Call It a Publicity Stunt

While many praised the mission for promoting women in STEM and space exploration, not everyone was impressed. Some critics said the trip was just a publicity stunt, pointing out that the crew was filled with celebrities and high-profile names.

TV host Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez responded strongly to those comments. “If you’re criticizing us, you don’t understand what this really means,” said King. “The messages we’re getting from young girls prove that this trip has real value.”

Lauren Sanchez also spoke about the impact the mission had on younger women who now see more possibilities for their own futures.

Emily Ratajkowski Speaks Out Against the Trip

Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski had a different opinion. She said the trip was wasteful and criticized Blue Origin for using so many resources for a short flight. “Look at the state of the world,” she said. “How much was spent on this, and for what?”

A Mission to Inspire

Despite the criticism, the all-women crew says their mission was about more than just going to space—it was about inspiring the next generation. Katy Perry and her fellow travelers want more young girls to believe they, too, can reach for the stars.

As space tourism grows, moments like these help spark conversations about who gets to go to space, what it means, and how it can be done in a way that benefits the Earth.
