Gippy Grewal’s latest Punjabi movie Akaal is creating waves at the Indian box office. The film tells a powerful story of Sikh warriors and has been receiving a lot of love from the audience. Despite facing major protests in Punjab, the film is holding strong and has now become the highest-grossing Punjabi film of 2025 so far.
Akaal is being presented in both Punjabi and Hindi languages and is made in association with Dharma Productions. The movie has done surprisingly well even with several challenges, including backlash from a section of the public.
Akaal Faces Controversy But Stays Strong at the Box Office
The film ran into controversy soon after its release. Protests broke out in parts of Punjab, where some people claimed that the film hurt religious sentiments. The main issue raised was the portrayal of Sikh characters drinking alcohol and using tobacco, which many found offensive.
Despite these protests and the resulting tension, Akaal managed to pull audiences to theaters. The Gippy Grewal starrer has proven that strong content and star power can overcome even the toughest hurdles.
Day 5 Box Office Collection: Slight Drop, But Still Strong
According to early estimates by Sacnilk, Akaal earned ₹67 lakhs on Day 5 (Monday). While this is a 52% drop compared to Sunday’s collection of ₹1.40 crore, the numbers are still quite solid, especially considering it’s a weekday.
Interestingly, Monday saw better numbers than Friday, mostly due to the Ambedkar Jayanti holiday, which gave a slight push to the collections.
Here’s the day-wise box office collection (net earnings) in India:
- Day 1 (Thursday): ₹85 lakhs
- Day 2 (Friday): ₹59 lakhs
- Day 3 (Saturday): ₹90 lakhs
