Furious 7, the seventh film in the Fast & Furious franchise, has turned 10 years old and has been re-released in theaters in China. The film, starring Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, was first released in 2015. Directed by James Wan, this action-packed movie was a major hit and remains one of the most emotional entries in the series due to Paul Walker’s tragic death during production.
Paul Walker passed away in a car accident while filming Furious 7. His brothers, Caleb and Cody Walker, stepped in to help finish his remaining scenes using CGI and body doubles. This caused a delay in the movie’s original release, but fans around the world showed massive support, making it one of the highest-grossing films in the franchise.
Now, ten years later, the movie has returned to Chinese cinemas and is performing well at the box office once again. According to trade analyst Luiz Fernando, Furious 7 was re-released to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The film is very special to Chinese fans, as it was the highest-grossing Fast & Furious movie in China when it was first released.
During its re-release weekend, Furious 7 earned $1.3 million in China across more than 35,000 screenings. This has pushed its total earnings in the Chinese market to $392.2 million. Back in 2015, the film originally made $390.9 million in China alone, showing just how popular it remains even a decade later.
In North America, Furious 7 opened with an impressive $147.18 million and earned a total of $353 million during its original run. Worldwide, the film collected $1.16 billion from international markets, bringing its total global box office earnings to $1.51 billion.
This massive total puts Furious 7 just behind The Avengers (2012), which made $1.52 billion, making it the 13th highest-grossing film of all time. With the recent re-release in China, fans are wondering if it might climb even higher and possibly surpass The Avengers on the global chart.
The story of Furious 7 follows Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), and their crew as they work with a secret government agent known as Mr. Nobody (played by Kurt Russell). Their mission is to stop a dangerous terrorist named Mose Jakande (played by Djimon Hounsou) from getting control of a powerful surveillance program called God’s Eye.
The movie also stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, and Kurt Russell, making it one of the most star-studded films in the franchise.
As of now, there are eleven Fast & Furious movies. The latest one, Fast X, was released in 2023, and a sequel to it is already in development. It is expected to be released in 2025.
With its emotional connection to fans and exciting action scenes, Furious 7 remains one of the most beloved entries in the series. The re-release proves that Paul Walker’s legacy is still alive, and fans continue to show their love for both him and the film.
