Emraan Hashmi is one of the most well-known actors in the Hindi film industry. He has been a part of Bollywood for over a decade and has built a strong fan base over the years. Just like many other celebrities, Emraan also spoke about the ongoing debate around nepotism in Bollywood last year. In two separate interviews, the actor shared his honest views on the matter.

In a chat with Pinkvilla, Emraan reflected on his journey in the film industry. He admitted that coming from a film background does give people an advantage. He said, “There definitely is an advantage for people in the industry to find inroads or just get a foot in the door when you want to have… Just see your dreams fulfilled. But eventually, the audience decides.”

Emraan, who is known for films like The Dirty Picture, added that being part of a film family made it a little easier for him to enter Bollywood. He said, “I, for one, have had the privilege of being part of a film family. I probably might not have got the grand launch that some other star kids would have had, but it was easy.”

He also spoke about the struggles outsiders face while trying to enter the film industry. “It is tougher for someone, and I have seen it along the way before I got into the industry because I have been an assistant director. I have seen that it is difficult. Forget about getting an audition or getting cast in a film; even getting a meeting with the AD and access to the office is difficult,” Emraan explained.

In another interview with ANI, the actor gave more thoughts on nepotism. He said, “Nepotism is like, by definition, you have this unfair advantage that some people have by the sheer function of their relations and contacts. And this is the bitter truth, not just about our industry.”

Emraan pointed out that nepotism exists in many other industries too, not just Bollywood. “There are many other industries where some people have merit. They don’t get things based on merit, but because of contacts, they get a position or designated job in that profession,” he said.

However, Emraan believes that while connections may help you enter the industry, it’s the audience that decides your future. “You might get your first film as a director or actor, but if people don’t like the film or you as an actor, you can’t have a long career. The audience is the real judge,” he said.

He also highlighted the many success stories of actors who come from non-film backgrounds. “There are many people in the industry who have come from small towns. The industry has given them a chance and helped them succeed. So it’s a mixed bag,” Emraan concluded.
