It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies. But did you know Emma Watson almost left the magical world after just two films?

Watson was only nine years old when she was cast as Hermione. Out of thousands of kids who auditioned, she stood out because of her intelligence, energy, and confidence. That charm helped bring Hermione to life in a way fans loved. But behind the scenes, she had a tough decision to make.

Emma originally signed on for only the first two Harry Potter movies. That means she could have left after Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and someone else could have taken over her role. Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer David Heyman shared how close Emma came to leaving. “They were initially signed up to two films, but then we had to renegotiate each time,” he said. While many actors stay for the fame or money, Emma’s reason was very different — school.

“Emma was very academic and really focused on her education,” Heyman explained. She cared deeply about her studies and found it hard to balance school and filming. Unlike some child stars, Watson wasn’t sure she wanted to stay in the spotlight. She asked herself, Is this what I really want to do?

Each time a new movie was being made, her contract had to be discussed again. The team behind the movies had to be patient and supportive. “In our position, you’re not dictating, you’re listening,” Heyman said. “We had to understand her point of view and respect how much school meant to her.”

What kept her going was her love for the character of Hermione. Emma couldn’t stand the thought of someone else playing the role. She had grown attached to Hermione and wanted to continue the journey. So, she chose to stay — and we’re so glad she did.

Emma went on to star in all eight Harry Potter movies, growing up on screen with her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. Together, they became one of the most beloved trios in movie history.

Even while acting in one of the world’s biggest film series, Emma never gave up on her dream of going to school. After the final movie, she went to Brown University and graduated in 2014 with a degree in English literature.

Looking back, Emma said she was happy she stayed with the franchise. The pressure was real, but she has no regrets. She balanced being a movie star and a top student — something Hermione herself would definitely approve of.

So yes, Harry Potter fans almost had a different Hermione. But in the end, Emma Watson chose both magic and education — and that made all the difference.
