Olsen shared that before she ever put on Wanda’s red jacket and tapped into chaos magic, she was already a fan of the Marvel films—especially Iron Man. “I thought the Iron Man movies were so great,” she said. “They reminded me of these big, Greek-style stories.” For her, Marvel wasn’t just about action and explosions. She admired how the films reflected society and politics in subtle but powerful ways. “They mirrored culture and politics in a really lovely way,” she added. That connection made her proud to join the Marvel universe at the time.
The Changing Conversation Around Marvel
However, Olsen also talked about how people’s views of the MCU have changed over the last 10 years. She pointed out that these days, it seems like people either strongly support Marvel movies or criticize them for taking over cinema. “Now it feels like a hot take if an actor says they would never do a Marvel movie or if a filmmaker says it’s ruining theaters,” she noted. While she didn’t name names, it’s clear she was referring to the ongoing debate sparked by well-known directors like Martin Scorsese.
Despite all the discussion around superhero movies, Olsen remains proud of what she’s accomplished as Wanda. But now, she’s ready to explore other parts of her creativity.
Moving Beyond Marvel
As much as she enjoyed being in the MCU, Olsen explained that it’s time for her to take on projects that better reflect her personal taste. “I’ve spent so many years doing Marvel that now all the other jobs I take have to really show what I love as an artist,” she said. She made it clear that while she values her time as Wanda, Marvel isn’t the kind of art she usually watches or is most passionate about. “I’ve been honest about that,” she added.
Importantly, Olsen isn’t turning her back on Marvel. Instead, she’s trying to find balance. “I feel like I have to focus on picking projects that go well alongside all the Marvel work I’ve done, to show people what I’m really about,” she explained.
