Disney’s live-action Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, has unfortunately turned out to be the biggest box office flop of the year. Even after being re-released in theaters across the U.S., the movie could not attract more audiences or boost its earnings. Despite being one of Disney’s most expensive and ambitious remakes, Snow White has failed to recover its huge production cost.
Recently, the film was re-released in over 1,000 domestic theaters in hopes of improving its performance. But according to a report by The Telegraph (via CBR), the re-release didn’t help much. The movie only earned an average of $252 per screening, making a total of around $335,000. This is a very small number, especially for a film of this scale.
So far, Snow White has collected around $86.65 million at the North American box office after 53 days since its release on March 21, 2025. Even after nearly two months in theaters, the movie hasn’t been able to cross the $100 million mark in the U.S., which is considered a low number for a Disney film.
Overseas, the movie has performed a bit better but still not enough to save it. It has earned $117.38 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide box office collection to around $204.03 million. However, this still falls short of its massive budget, which was between $240 million and $270 million. This means Snow White is still $36 to $66 million short of covering its costs.
To make things worse, movies usually need to earn 1.5 to 2 times their production budget to break even, because marketing and distribution also cost a lot. In this case, Snow White is nowhere near that break-even point, making it a major financial loss for Disney.
Critics and audiences had mixed feelings about the film. Some people liked the new take on the classic fairy tale and praised the visual effects. But others didn’t enjoy the changes made to the original story. There was also some backlash due to the casting and certain creative decisions, which may have led to many viewers skipping the film altogether.
Even though the movie did okay in some international markets, it wasn’t enough to cover up the poor performance in North America. The film’s disappointing numbers show that not every Disney remake can strike gold at the box office, no matter how big the brand or the budget.
Now, Disney has made Snow White available to rent or buy on VOD platforms starting May 13, 2025. The movie will also be available on Blu-ray from June 24, 2025. It remains to be seen if the digital and home release will help recover at least a small part of the losses.
