Dimple Kapadia is one of Bollywood’s most talented and versatile actresses. She made her debut in 1973 with Bobby, a film that became a massive success. However, despite the movie’s popularity, Dimple took a break from acting after just one film. This was because she married superstar Rajesh Khanna the same year, and he did not want her to continue working in films.
Rajesh Khanna later admitted that he had no idea about Dimple’s acting skills at the time. He believed that their children needed a mother who would be there for them rather than being raised by house help. The couple was together for nearly a decade before they separated in 1982.
Dimple Kapadia’s Comeback and Success
Two years after her separation from Rajesh Khanna, Dimple Kapadia made a powerful comeback in Bollywood. She starred in Saagar (1985), opposite Rishi Kapoor once again. Her performance in the film won her several accolades, including the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Dimple did not limit herself to conventional roles. She took on complex and unconventional characters in movies like Rudaali, Kaash, Lekin, and Krantiveer. These performances cemented her reputation as an actress who could handle diverse and challenging roles. As her career progressed, she transitioned into supporting roles with equal grace and conviction.
Rajesh Khanna’s Views on Dimple Kapadia’s Acting Career
A few years ago, a report by News 18 revealed an interesting conversation between Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. In the interview, Rajesh Khanna shared his views on why he had initially opposed Dimple’s acting career but later encouraged their daughter Twinkle Khanna to pursue films.
When Rajesh Khanna suggested that Twinkle try acting, she asked, “You will let me act, but you didn’t let Mom do films?” He responded, “That’s because I am your father, not your husband.” He further explained that when he married Dimple, Bobby had not yet been released, so he did not know about her incredible talent. By the time he saw the film and realized her potential, their first daughter was already born. He admitted that restricting someone’s talent is unfair and that if he had known how successful Bobby would be, he wouldn’t have stopped her from acting.
Rajesh Khanna, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, passed away in 2012.
