The magical world of Oz is returning to the big screen as Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo step back into their roles for the much-awaited sequel, Wicked: For Good. After the huge success of the first movie, which brought the Broadway hit Wicked to life, fans are excited to see what’s next. This new chapter continues the story that started in 2024 and promises even more magic, music, and drama.

In the first film, audiences were reintroduced to the land of Oz with dazzling visuals and powerful performances. The movie was based on the hit musical, which itself was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Now, the sequel is shifting its focus to a new generation of characters and deeper emotional storytelling.

Two Wicked Stars Won’t Return for the Sequel

While many familiar faces are returning, two original Wicked stars from the Broadway show will not be coming back. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who played Glinda and Elphaba on stage, made quick cameo appearances in the first movie. They appeared briefly in Emerald City as unnamed performers. However, they will not return for Wicked: For Good.

In an interview with ExtraTV, Kristin Chenoweth explained why they’re sitting this one out. “We are not. But Idina and I feel really good about it. It’s their time,” she said. “We had our moment and we were very honored they included us, but it’s their turn.”

The sequel will have a more emotional tone and a stronger focus on the current cast, making it a natural decision for the original stars to step aside.

Who’s Coming Back in Wicked: For Good?

Besides Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the sequel brings back a talented cast. Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Marissa Bode are all returning for the second film. Fans can expect even more from their favorite characters as the story moves closer to the events of The Wizard of Oz.

Wicked: For Good Trailer Sets New Record

Excitement for Wicked: For Good is at an all-time high. The official teaser trailer broke records with 113 million views in just 24 hours. That’s more than the first film’s trailer received, and it’s a number usually seen with blockbuster hits.

The trailer’s performance puts it ahead of big titles like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. While it hasn’t caught up to superhero movies like Deadpool & Wolverine or James Gunn’s Superman, Wicked: For Good is gaining attention fast.

With growing hype, a star-studded cast, and a story that’s getting deeper and more emotional, Wicked: For Good is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of 2025.
