Long before Bollywood fully embraced science fiction with movies like Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish, Robot, and Ra.One, superstar Aamir Khan had already started working on a sci-fi project titled Time Machine. This ambitious film was based on the concept of time travel and was directed by one of India’s most respected filmmakers, Shekhar Kapur.
Kapur is known for critically acclaimed films like Masoom, Bandit Queen, and the international hit Elizabeth, which won him a BAFTA award. His team-up with perfectionist actor Aamir Khan created huge excitement among movie lovers at the time. Even though the film never got completed, fans still talk about it and wonder what could have been.
The Cast and Story of Time Machine
Time Machine had an impressive star cast. Along with Aamir Khan in the lead, the movie also featured Raveena Tandon, Rekha, Naseeruddin Shah, and Vijay Anand. The film’s storyline was reportedly inspired by H.G. Wells’ classic 1895 novel The Time Machine and the Hollywood hit Back to the Future.
The plot focused on Aamir Khan’s character, who travels from the 1990s back to the 1960s using a time machine created by the character played by Vijay Anand. His goal was to meet his parents before they even knew each other. The film had an emotional core mixed with futuristic science fiction – something rarely seen in Indian cinema at that time.
Why Was Time Machine Shelved?
Around 75% of the film was already shot when the project was suddenly stopped. The main reasons were financial issues and Shekhar Kapur’s move to the United States. Due to these setbacks, Time Machine was never completed or released, despite the buzz around it.
Can Time Machine Be Revived?
Back in 2008, Shekhar Kapur had expressed interest in bringing the film back to life with a new cast. Unfortunately, the project didn’t move forward. However, there’s still hope that Time Machine could be revived someday – and here’s why.
Better Technology and Bigger Budgets
The Indian film industry has changed a lot since the 1990s. Today’s movies are made with higher budgets, better production quality, and advanced visual effects (VFX). This makes it easier and more affordable to create high-quality sci-fi films. Audiences have also become more open to experimental stories, making the market perfect for a time-travel film like Time Machine.
Aamir Khan and Shekhar Kapur – A Dream Collaboration?
Shekhar Kapur is currently preparing for his next project, Masoom 2, and Aamir Khan is all set to release Sitaare Zameen Par later this year. If these two legends of Indian cinema decide to reunite and work on Time Machine again, it would surely be a dream come true for fans.
A New Cast for a Modern Audience?
If the film is revived, its story might need some updates to suit today’s viewers. Imagine Aamir Khan starring in a sci-fi adventure with popular stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, directed by Shekhar Kapur. That would create massive excitement among moviegoers and bring fresh energy to the project.
