The Minecraft video game has taken the big screen by storm! A Minecraft Movie, the film adaptation of the beloved game, is making huge waves at the global box office. The movie is now one of the top 15 highest-grossing movies ever made by Warner Bros Pictures. It has already passed big titles like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and is now aiming to join the billion-dollar club.
A Minecraft Movie stars Jason Momoa and was released in theaters on April 4, 2025. Despite tough competition, it opened strong with $162.75 million in its debut weekend in the United States. As of now, it has earned $399.83 million in North America and a massive $476.40 million overseas. This brings its total global box office collection to an impressive $876.23 million.
The film has officially surpassed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made $874.36 million worldwide when it was released back in 2016. That film starred Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman, with a special appearance by Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Although it was a major release at the time, A Minecraft Movie has now taken the lead.
It has also moved ahead of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, another popular Warner Bros movie. According to data from The Numbers, A Minecraft Movie is now ranked #15 on Warner Bros’ list of highest-grossing movies. It sits just behind Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which still holds a slightly higher spot.
The top spot on Warner Bros’ list is currently held by the 2023 mega-hit Barbie, which remains the studio’s highest-grossing film of all time. Interestingly, Jason Momoa appears twice in the top rankings—once for A Minecraft Movie and again for Aquaman, which is Warner Bros’ third highest-grossing movie ever.
What’s even more exciting for fans is that A Minecraft Movie is not done yet. With strong box office momentum, the film might soon cross the $1 billion mark, joining the ranks of the most successful video game movies in history.
Even though it’s still doing well in theaters, the movie is also set for a digital release soon. It will be available to rent or buy on Video-On-Demand (VOD) platforms starting May 13, 2025. So fans who missed it in theaters will have a chance to enjoy it at home.
