The Minecraft Movie, starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, is proving to be a massive success at the box office. After a strong opening weekend, the film continued to perform exceptionally well throughout the week. In just 7 days, it crossed the $200 million mark at the North American box office, becoming the first movie of 2025 to achieve this milestone.
From its very first preview screenings, the movie started setting records. Even though the reviews from critics have been mixed, the audience response has been extremely positive. Thanks to strong word-of-mouth and the popularity of the Minecraft game, the movie is attracting large crowds and breaking records every day.
Earlier, it was reported that A Minecraft Movie had already beaten the lifetime earnings of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in North America. Now, the latest update reveals that the film has crossed $200 million in the region, with its total standing at $200.36 million after just one week.
On its seventh day (Thursday), the movie earned a solid $7.15 million. This makes it the third biggest Thursday ever for a video game movie. Only The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($9.9 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ($11.6 million) had bigger Thursday earnings in the video game adaptation category.
With this strong performance, A Minecraft Movie has now become the third video game-based film to earn over $200 million in North America. The only other two films in this club are The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Given its current pace, the film is expected to cross the $236.11 million lifetime total of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 by this Sunday. If that happens, it will become the second highest-grossing video game adaptation ever in North America.
Worldwide, the movie is doing even better. So far, it has made a whopping $351.06 million globally. Of that, $200.36 million came from North America, while the international box office has added another $150.70 million. With such a strong global performance, the movie is expected to hit the $400 million mark soon, and it’s likely to reach $500 million in the near future.
Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie is based on the popular sandbox video game Minecraft, which has millions of fans around the world. The combination of a star-studded cast, massive fan following, and family-friendly entertainment is clearly working in the film’s favor.
As of now, the movie continues to lead the box office charts and shows no signs of slowing down. With more weekends ahead and strong support from both young fans and adults, A Minecraft Movie is set to be one of the biggest hits of 2025.
