Lionsgate Films recently released the psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, directed by Trey Edward Shults, in theaters across the United States. The movie stars pop star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan. Even with a popular cast and a unique concept, the film has failed to grab the attention of audiences and critics alike.
Hurry Up Tomorrow is a companion film to The Weeknd’s 2025 album of the same name. It explores dark psychological themes and portrays Abel as a fictional version of himself—a sleep-deprived musician on the verge of a mental breakdown. He begins an intense and surreal journey led by a mysterious fan named Anima, played by Jenna Ortega. While the idea sounded promising, the movie hasn’t made the splash many expected.
The film opened in U.S. theaters on May 16 and made just $2.5 million on its first day. This number includes $1.7 million from Thursday night previews and early screenings. According to Box Office Mojo, the opening weekend forecast is looking weak, with the film expected to earn less than $4 million in total.
Hurry Up Tomorrow debuted at the #4 spot in the U.S. box office chart. That’s a disappointing result considering its reported $15 million budget. Early signs suggest that the movie will be a box office flop.
Critics have also not been kind to the film. It received a very low 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. However, the general audience seems to have responded more positively, giving it a 71% score. Still, that wasn’t enough to boost the movie’s performance at the box office. On CinemaScore, it earned a C– grade, which usually indicates poor word-of-mouth from moviegoers.
The film’s poor performance is partly due to strong competition at the box office. Other big releases like Sinners, Thunderbolts (Marvel), and Final Destination: Bloodlines are currently dominating theaters. With these high-profile titles pulling in large audiences, Hurry Up Tomorrow is struggling to stand out.
The film’s development dates back to 2022, when The Weeknd lost his voice during a concert due to stress. That real-life experience inspired the story. The movie blends reality and fiction, showing his character’s mental and emotional breakdown through a dreamlike and often disturbing lens. Jenna Ortega plays a key role as the mysterious Anima, who seems to guide—or manipulate—Abel’s character during his breakdown.
Despite the big names involved and the strong fan following of both Jenna Ortega and The Weeknd, Hurry Up Tomorrow just hasn’t been able to live up to expectations. With weak box office numbers, harsh critic reviews, and tough competition, it looks like the movie is headed toward being one of the year’s biggest disappointments.
