The official trailer for James Gunn’s Superman is finally here, and it brings a fresh take on the legendary superhero. Released on May 14 through DC’s official YouTube channel, the full-length trailer gives fans a closer look at David Corenswet’s Superman, a hero trying to balance saving the world with dealing with public criticism and personal struggles.

The film, simply titled Superman, is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. It’s the first standalone Superman movie in over 10 years and also the first movie in the rebooted DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

A Personal and Political Superman Story

Unlike past Superman films, this one takes a more serious and emotional approach. The three-minute trailer shows Clark Kent dealing with not just enemies, but the pressure of being a powerful figure in a divided world.

The trailer opens with Clark Kent being interviewed on TV by Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. She questions him about his actions, especially when he steps in to help other countries. “You acting like a representative of the United States might cause more problems around the world,” she says. Superman responds, “I wasn’t representing anybody except for me—and doing good.”

This moment sets the tone for the rest of the trailer, showing that not everyone sees Superman as a hero. While some people thank him for his help, others believe he’s too powerful and acts without permission. The trailer also shows a wounded Superman being saved by his loyal dog, Krypto, giving a touching moment that shows his vulnerability.

Meet the New Lex Luthor

Nicholas Hoult appears in the trailer as the famous villain Lex Luthor. His character seems more intense and frightening, with one of his key lines being: “He’s not a man. He’s an it that’s somehow become the focal point of the entire world’s conversation.” This shows that Lex sees Superman as a threat, not just to him, but to the entire world.

A Strong Supporting Cast

The film also features several other DC characters who will be part of this new universe. The supporting cast includes:

  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
  • Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho
  • Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
  • Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner (Green Lantern)

The trailer hints that these heroes will help expand the DC Universe, while the main focus remains on Superman’s personal story, his relationship with Lois Lane, and his journey to the Fortress of Solitude.

A New Kind of Superman

James Gunn’s Superman is not just a superhero movie—it’s a deep story about what it means to be good in a world that often sees things in shades of grey. This film asks big questions: Should a hero follow government rules? What happens when people fear the one person trying to save them?

With its mix of action, emotion, and big ideas, Superman (2025) is shaping up to be a bold new beginning for the DC Universe.
