Abhijeet Bhattacharya is a well-known playback singer in Bollywood. Over the years, he has sung many hit songs for top actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. Apart from his singing, he is also known for making bold and sometimes controversial statements. In one such interview, Abhijeet claimed that it was his voice and songs that helped make Akshay Kumar a Bollywood star.
Abhijeet started his singing career with the help of legendary music director R.D. Burman. His first break came in a Bengali film where he sang a duet with famous singer Asha Bhosle. But it was during the 1990s and early 2000s that Abhijeet became one of the most popular playback singers in Hindi cinema. He was especially famous for his songs for Shah Rukh Khan and was often called the “Voice of SRK” because of how well his voice matched Khan’s on-screen presence.
In an interview with India.com, quoted by Hindustan Times, Abhijeet talked about how his songs helped many actors become stars. He said that music plays a powerful role in making an actor popular. According to him, Akshay Kumar was not a big star in the beginning. He recalled that people used to call Akshay the “poor man’s Mithun Chakraborty,” just like Mithun was once called the “poor man’s Amitabh Bachchan.”
Abhijeet explained, “I am usually asked to sing only for stars, not just any actor. No matter how well I sing, if the actor doesn’t have star quality, the song doesn’t work the same way. For example, there’s Shah Rukh Khan on one side and Suniel Shetty on the other. SRK has charm and class, while Suniel has a rugged, action-hero vibe. I sang for both of them, and the songs were hits.”
He added that his songs helped shape Akshay Kumar’s career. “When Akshay was launched, he wasn’t a star. But after Khiladi, things changed. That movie became a big hit, and many of his later films also had Khiladi in the title. My songs suited his image perfectly and helped him grow. Actors like Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, and Rajesh Khanna also became stars because of strong music backing their films.”
Abhijeet’s remarks show how important music is in Bollywood. A singer’s voice can boost an actor’s image and even turn them into a superstar. According to him, if the music connects with the audience, the actor becomes more likable and gains popularity faster.
While some may find his views a bit bold, there’s no denying that music plays a major role in a film’s success—and Abhijeet Bhattacharya certainly believes that his voice helped shape the careers of many Bollywood legends, including Akshay Kumar.
