Singer Mika Singh is often in the news—sometimes for his music, but more often for his controversial remarks or bold actions. One such incident involved a shocking tweet where he claimed he was bringing USD 2 lakh into India, directly challenging Customs officials. The tweet wasn’t just bold—it led to a dramatic airport scene that Mika recently spoke about in detail.
In an interview with YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra, Mika Singh shared the full story behind the now-famous airport incident. He revealed that it all started when Indian Customs officials once stopped him and his team for allegedly carrying more foreign currency than the allowed limit.
“Sameer Wankhede, who’s now a friend of mine, stopped me and my band at the airport. At that time, each person was allowed to carry only USD 1,000,” Mika said. He added that this limit has now increased to USD 10,000. “When we were stopped, I got really upset. He asked me to calm down and take a seat. But outside, rumors started spreading that I had been detained. I didn’t even know what that word meant back then. I felt very sad.”
Feeling angry and misunderstood, Mika decided to respond in his own unique way—through a tweet that would catch everyone’s attention.
“To make a point, I tweeted, ‘I am coming back to India with USD 2 lakh. Catch me if you can!’” Mika said with a laugh. “I didn’t think much before posting it. I was just joking, but I wanted to show how upset I was. I had done many performances for the Customs department before, and this whole thing made me feel really disrespected.”
What followed was nothing short of dramatic. When Mika landed at the airport after his tweet, he was surprised by the heavy presence of officials waiting for him.
“It was like a movie scene,” he recalled. “There were so many officers at the airport, it felt like they were expecting Dawood Ibrahim or someone big to walk in, wearing gold chains. I was shocked to see that kind of attention.”
When officials questioned him, Mika said he laughed and asked them if they really thought he would be foolish enough to carry that much money openly.
“I asked them, ‘Do you think I’m stupid enough to actually bring USD 2 lakh into the country? You believed my tweet? I was just joking!’” he said.
Although the tweet turned out to be a prank, officials didn’t let him go completely free. Mika revealed he had two bottles of expensive scotch whisky in his luggage, and he had to pay Customs duty for those instead.
“I got stopped for the whisky, not for the money!” he said, smiling.
This entire incident became one of the many moments when Mika Singh’s bold words made national headlines. Whether intentional or not, the singer certainly knows how to stir up attention—on stage or off it.
