Captain America: Brave New World is still chasing its final milestone at the North American box office, but it missed the mark once again this past weekend. Despite a strong start, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film continues to lose momentum and has now dropped out of the top box office rankings. Making things worse, it has also lost a large number of theatres in North America, showing that its theatrical run is nearing its end.
The film had high hopes of performing well financially, especially with a massive budget of $180 million. However, it is now on track to become a loss-making movie for Marvel Studios. Interestingly, Captain America 4 did help push the MCU franchise past a global milestone of $2.5 billion in total box office earnings. But this solo film, led by Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, hasn’t lived up to expectations.
The movie also introduced a new Falcon, played by Danny Ramirez, who is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday. This installment aimed to build Sam Wilson’s role as the new Captain America, but its performance at the box office has been disappointing.
According to trade expert Luiz Fernando, Captain America: Brave New World suffered a steep decline in its ninth weekend at the box office. It lost a staggering 1,310 theatres and is now only playing in 440 across North America. Over the weekend, it earned just $342,000, which marks a sharp 75.2% drop compared to the previous weekend.
As of now, the film’s domestic earnings sit at $199.9 million—just shy of the $200 million mark. What’s more surprising is that the movie has been stuck below this milestone for three consecutive weekends, failing to cross the line. Projections suggest it may finally reach $200 million before it ends its run, but that will likely be the last major achievement for this MCU title in North America.
Internationally, the film has done slightly better, collecting $213.75 million. This brings its global total to $413.67 million. Even though the film crossed $400 million worldwide, it’s still seen as an underwhelming performance for a Marvel movie, especially considering the hype and budget involved.
The movie features a strong cast, including Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford. It was released in theatres on February 14 and had hopes of dominating the box office. However, its journey has been rocky.
Adding to its woes, Captain America: Brave New World has now lost its title as the highest-grossing movie of 2025 to A Minecraft Movie, which outperformed it this weekend. With only a few weeks left in its theatrical run, it seems unlikely that the film will make a big comeback.
Despite its box office struggles, the movie played a crucial role in shaping the future of the MCU by establishing Sam Wilson as the new Captain America and setting the stage for what’s to come in future Avengers films.
