At a recent media event in Mumbai for his upcoming film Kesari: Chapter 2, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar responded to veteran actress Jaya Bachchan’s earlier criticism of the title of his 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. During the event, a journalist asked him about her comments, and Akshay replied with grace and humility.
He said, “If she has said so, she is right. If I made a mistake by making such a film, she might be right.” His respectful reply showed that he values her opinion, even though the movie carried a meaningful social message.
Jaya Bachchan had shared her thoughts at the India TV Conclave. She questioned the title of the film, saying, “Just look at the title of the film; I would never go to watch a film with such a name. Yeh, koi naam hai?” She also asked the audience if they would watch a movie with such a name. Only a few people raised their hands, and she joked, “Among so many people, hardly four people want to watch the film; it’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai.”
Despite the criticism, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was a successful and socially impactful film. It aimed to raise awareness about the lack of sanitation facilities in rural India. The movie told the story of Keshav, played by Akshay Kumar, whose wife Jaya, played by Bhumi Pednekar, leaves him after discovering that his house has no toilet. To win her back, Keshav decides to fight against age-old traditions and build a toilet in his home. The film highlighted the importance of hygiene and the need for change in society.
Now, Akshay Kumar is gearing up for the release of Kesari: Chapter 2, which is set to hit theatres on April 18. This historical drama is based on the book The Case That Shook The Empire by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat. The movie tells the powerful story of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the legal battle that followed.
In Kesari: Chapter 2, Akshay plays the role of C. Sankaran Nair, a brave lawyer and former President of the Indian National Congress. Nair fought for justice after the tragic massacre that took place in 1919 when British troops opened fire on a peaceful crowd in Amritsar. His efforts to bring the truth to light played an important role in India’s freedom struggle.
With this film, Akshay Kumar hopes to bring attention to a key moment in Indian history and honor the people who stood up against injustice. Just like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Kesari: Chapter 2 aims to deliver a strong message while telling a compelling story.
As always, Akshay Kumar continues to choose roles that highlight important social and historical themes. Whether it’s sanitation or justice, the actor is known for using his films to spark conversations and bring awareness to important issues.
