The Hindi teaser of Ram Charan’s upcoming film Peddi has finally dropped, and while there’s a lot to be excited about, there are also some concerns—especially when compared to its Tamil version, which was far more convincing.

Peddi, directed by Buchi Babu Sana, is set in 1980s rural Andhra Pradesh and follows the story of a passionate villager who uses sports to unite his community and defend their pride against a powerful enemy. If this plot sounds familiar, you’re not alone. It carries strong echoes of Aamir Khan’s Lagaan—a spirited underdog rising against odds through sport. Yet, Peddi seems to bring its own flavor, driven by a unique cultural setting and powerful music.

The synopsis on IMDb reads: “In 1980s rural Andhra Pradesh, a spirited villager unites his community through sports to defend their pride against a powerful rival.” That alone sets the stage for a promising and emotional journey. While the similarity with Lagaan is noticeable, Peddi still stands on its own with fresh characters and setting, potentially making it a memorable film.

However, the biggest concern with the Hindi version lies in the language dubbing. Many Indian moviegoers grew up in the 90s watching South Indian and foreign films dubbed into Hindi with inconsistent lip-sync and awkward voiceovers. This used to disconnect viewers from the emotion on screen. Thankfully, this changed with the release of Baahubali, where SS Rajamouli ensured a high-quality Hindi dub that matched perfectly with the performances, raising the bar for pan-India films.

Since then, films like RRR, KGF, and Pushpa continued this trend with fantastic dubs that didn’t take away from the viewing experience. But unfortunately, the Hindi teaser of Peddi feels like a step back. Ram Charan’s character appears to have a strange Bhojpuri-style Hindi accent, which feels unnatural and even unintentionally reminds viewers of Ravi Kishan’s Zindagi Jhand Baa. Once that comparison sticks in your head, it’s hard to shake off.

This awkward accent makes it difficult to appreciate some of the teaser’s highlights, like A.R. Rahman’s powerful background score and the energetic Mazza Mazza chorus, which has the same high energy as Naatu Naatu from RRR. It’s frustrating because the visuals and the music are strong, but the voice dubbing creates an unnecessary distraction.

Despite this, there’s still hope. This is just the first teaser, and it’s possible that future trailers or promotional material will correct the dubbing issue or at least make it less jarring. If they do, then Peddi could very well become a game-changer for Ram Charan’s Hindi film career. The actor already has a strong fanbase in South India, and Peddi could help him expand further into the North.

The film stars Ram Charan, Janhvi Kapoor, Divyenndu, and Jagpathi Babu, making it a high-profile release to watch out for. Let’s hope the final product matches the expectations that the powerful plot and music have already set.
